Assessment of Groundwater Suitability for Agricultural Purposes: A Case Study of South Oued Righ Region, Algeria

Groundwater in the Touggourt region—or as its named, Oued Righ—in southeastern Algeria, is only source of irrigation. To assess suitability for agricultural purposes, we collected 72 samples from wells at this region, physical and chemical measurements were carried out each water sample, calculations sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), permeability index (PI), soluble percent (SSP), residual carbonate (RSC), magnesium hazard (MHR) Kelley’s (KR) out, these indices are often used to groundwater irrigation uses. Based on quality (IWQI) values, a spatial distribution map parameter using inverse interpolation technique (IDW) was produced by Geographical Information System (GIS). According IWQI map, about 35% analyzed fall into Severe Restriction category (SR), making it unsuitable under normal circumstance. Again, remaining 65% has high restriction (HR) use. study area could be highly permeable soils where salt-tolerant crops grown. Adequate drainage continuous monitoring recommended.
